Eknath Shinde's comeback as Maharashtra in limbo, BJP finalises Chief Minister

The formation of the new Maharashtra government remains in limbo as allies within the Mahayuti alliance engaged in a power tussle in their quest for key portfolios.

In something of a breakthrough, over a week since the election results were declared, the BJP has finalised who will be the chief minister of Maharashtra, with an announcement soon to come.

Meanwhile, caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who has been recovering from a high fever in his hometown, is expected to return to Mumbai later on Sunday, with all eyes on his next move.

Shiv Sena sources indicated that the party is seeking the Deputy Chief Minister's post, the Home portfolio, and aims to retain all its nine existing ministries, including the crucial industries and urban development portfolios.

BJP leader Raosaheb Danve stated on Sunday that the name of Maharashtra's new chief minister has been finalised, but confirmation is awaited from the senior party leadership. Devendra Fadnavis is widely regarded as the frontrunner.

    • "The people of Maharashtra know who will be the next Chief Minister," Danve said, without revealing the name.

Eknath Shinde, who left for his native village Dare in Satara district amid speculation of dissatisfaction with the power-sharing negotiations, who fell ill during his stay. An aide said Shinde, now reportedly on the road to recovery, is expected to return to Mumbai on Sunday evening.

Despite Shinde apparently giving up his claim to the top post, indications of ongoing disagreements emerged when a meeting of the Mahayuti allies was postponed on Friday, after which the Shiv Sena leader left for his village. Discussions between Mahayuti leaders are now likely to take place on Monday.

      • Point #

The Mahayuti allies, including Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), have already named their legislature party leaders — Eknath Shinde for Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar for NCP. However, the BJP, the largest constituent of the alliance, has yet to name its legislature party leader. A senior BJP leader indicated that this decision might be made on December 2.

While no official announcement has been made on the Chief Minister, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule confirmed that the oath-taking ceremony for the new Mahayuti government is scheduled for December 5 at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to attend.

      • Point #

NCP chief Ajit Pawar confirmed on Saturday that the chief minister will be from the BJP, with deputy chief ministers from both the NCP and Shiv Sena. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leaders have indicated they will wait for the BJP to declare its chief ministerial candidate before outlining their next steps.

      • Point #

The Mahayuti alliance secured a landslide victory in the assembly elections. The BJP won 132 seats, followed by Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena with 57 and Ajit Pawar's NCP with 41 seats in the 288-member House. Despite this clear majority, the government formation has been delayed due to the lack of consensus on the Chief Minister's post.

      • Point #

The delay in government formation has drawn scorn from the opposition. "To not be able to decide on a chief minister, and form government, for more than a week after result day, is not just an insult to Maharashtra (for taking our state so lightly) but also to the assistance provided by their dearest Election Commission," Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray said in a post on X
